Fractures

Bone fracture is a break in the bone. A bone can be completely or partially fractured. The break can occur along the length of the bone or across the bone. The extend and severity of fracture depend on the force that caused the fracture.
Types of fractures
Stable fracture- the broken ends of the bones are in line with each other
Open fracture-the broken bone pierce the skin
Transverse fracture- the fracture occurs at a right angle to the length of the bone
Oblique- the fracture line runs at an angle to the shaft (length) of the bone
Comminuted fracture- the bone breaks up into multiple pieces.
Causes of fracture
Road traffic accidents
falls
diseases which weaken the bones such as osteoporosis, sport injuries
Symptoms
Intense pain
Numbness (pins and needles sensation)
Inability to move the limbs
Swelling
Bruising
Deformity where the limb is out of place
Management of fractures
Cast and splint application – keep the bone immobilized and straightens it
Traction- use of pulleys and weights to align the bone and promote healing
